It is a common conversation amongst us in the AEC industry to talk about the projects that we are working on. Have you noticed that it seems to be the very first question we ask when we reunite with a colleague or past client? Somehow in this industry, we think the projects we are engaged in define our status, even our success. Is it possible the road to success stems from something other than the projects we are working on?

Projects come, and projects go, but relationships endure. Here at Structural Design Studio (SDS), we have learned that it is the people, those strategic relationships that define our success, not just the projects on our desks. Don’t get me wrong, delivering a quality project is of the utmost importance to the longevity of any firm. However, it is those strategic relationships that are the key to getting the next project.

As you stare down a new year of possibilities, be sure to look beyond the projects on your own desk and spend a little more time nurturing those important relationships. After all, those relationships might be the key to your own personal success.
