Not far from my home is a small relic of times past.  It is overgrown and nearly forgotten these days, but those granite walls stacked stone upon stone have a rich history.  To some it may look like an old ruin, but what I see is a unique story reaching out from a different time.  An encouraging whisper of the lasting impressions we create as engineers, architects, builders, and communities.

So often we get caught up in the day-to-day details, budgets and deadlines we forget we are designing much more than just a structure, exhibit, or building.  We are designing the very places that facilitate history.  Individuals will undoubtedly live, work, play and learn within the shadows of our designs, and to me that is an exciting, yet humbling thought.

I hope all of us in this dynamic A/E/C industry, whatever our role may be, will look beyond the day to day demands, and remember the heritage we are creating for individuals and communities.  May we all consciously try and focus our efforts on being a part of something much bigger than ourselves, bigger than the vision of a single project, and design structures together that will enrich the lives of others.  Like those granite walls, stone upon stone, we too have the ability to design and create a piece of timeless and life changing history.
